Saying Goodbye to Herman Cain

Herman Cain has officially “suspended” his bid for the Republican nomination for president. The announcement comes after Cain had been accused of a 13-year affair with a woman he claims was just a long time friend.

During Cain’s announcement of his campaign ending, he specifically attributed his leaving the race to the many accusations of sexual malfeasance that have arisen in past months. Undoubtably, the number of women that have come forward provides a strong case for a pattern of behavior, which Cain has denied. I suspect that this latest accusation is far more personally disturbing for Mr. Cain, his wife and his family. Single incidents of sexual harassment can be written off and explained relatively easily. Inappropriate comments can be “misheard” and inappropriate behavior wrongly remembered or wrongly interpreted. A 13 year affair with another woman is of a fundamentally different nature and demonstrates a Kennedy-like interpretation of the institution of marriage.

In the past I have strongly criticized Herman Cain. But, everyone, even Mr. Cain, deserves to be played out. Here’s to you Herman. Please, never come back.
