With the congressional supercommittee struggling to cut the federal deficit by at least $1.2 trillion, more than 150 lawmakers are insisting that the panel “go big.”

More than 40 of the House and Senate members, who gathered on Wednesday, urged the 12 members of the bipartisan supercommittee to compromise more in revenues and entitlement reforms to strike a deal that would trim the deficit by $4 trillion over the next decade.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) argued that going bigger would be more palatable politically since both sides would be more willing to compromise on their sacred cows if the other side was also going to take a hit.
