Associated Press (10/16/2011):
Sandra Fox, 69, of Baton Rouge, La., stood, confused, on 46th Street with a ticket for “Anything Goes” in her hand as riot police pushed a knot of about 200 shouting protesters toward her.
“I think it’s horrible what they’re doing,” she said of the protesters. “These people need to go get jobs.”
This “get a job” line has been repeated constantly since the protesters at Occupy Wall Street began their demonstration a month ago. Conservative commentators like Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly have been quick to dismiss the protesters as lazy, unproductive members of society who have nothing better to do with their time. Even Herman Cain has joined this choir, saying “Don’t blame Wall Street, don’t blame the big banks, if you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself!”
The most ridiculous part about it, of course, is that the same people who are so quick to tell these protesters to “get a job” are usually the first ones to condemn the Obama Administration for the unemployment rate being at 9%.
