The Inconceivable Insanity Of Republican Voters

Independent pollster Research 2000 conducted a scientific poll of 2,003 self-identified Republicans for Daily Kos. Here’s just a small part of what we learned about Republican voters.

  • 39% of Republicans want President Obama to be impeached, versus 32% who think not.
  • 36% believe Obama was not born in the United States, versus 42% who think he was.
  • 63% think Obama is a socialist, versus 21% who think not.
  • 53% believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Obama, versus 14% who think Obama is.
  • Puzzlingly, only 21% think ACORN stole the 2008 election, but 55% are “not sure” (so only 24% think Obama is legitimately the president).
  • Similarly, only 24% think Obama wants the terrorists to win, but 33% are “not sure” (so only 43% think Obama is rooting against the terrorists).
  • 34% believe that the birth control pill is abortion. Let’s be perfectly clear; they are not saying that preventing conception by chemical means is as bad as aborting a conceived fetus. They are saying that to prevent conception by chemical means is literally to abort a conceived fetus. (Regrettably, the pollsters did not think to ask if preventing conception by physical means — e.g., using a condom — is abortion too.)
  • Bruce Bartlett was a domestic policy adviser to Ronald Reagan and a Treasury official under George H.W. Bush. In a post titled “Why I Am Not a Republican“, he says:

I can only conclude from this new poll of 2003 self-identified Republicans nationwide that between 20% and 50% of the party is either insane or mind-numbingly stupid.

I think that 20% to 50% is an underestimate. I think some proportion of the Republicans who share these beliefs had to have realized that it was better not to confess such beliefs to a pollster.

Incidentally, 76% of Republicans also believe that abortion is murder. If the 34% who believe that the birth control pill is abortion are just a subset of these folks, then 34% of Republican voters believe that using the birth control pill is murder. If the two samples are completely independent, then 76% of 34% = 26% believe that using the birth control pill is murder. I can only conclude that 26% to 34% of Republicans nationwide are stark raving mad.

I often wonder how dumb republicans can be. I live Texas, an extremely republican state. I have friends that teach in New Mexico. These are important because of the following.

Most teachers in texas are republicans. However, teachers gripe about not having pay increases and not getting an increase in retirement pay. Both of these issues are constantly brought up by Democrats in Texas, but blocked by Republicans – yet teachers in texas still vote republican.

In New Mexico, most of the public servants (teachers, firefighters, ect) that are paid by the state were about to get fired because the state could not pay due to economic conditions. However, based on the stimulus packaged passed by demos, the state did not have to fire any of them. However, walk up and down the halls of a school in New Mexico and most teachers will say they are Republican and that Obama’s stimulus bill was a waste – yet they got to keep their job because of it???

I have decided that the majority of the american public that claim to be republicans have no idea about various policies. I am not talking about the very weathly, which are Republicans because they want to continue to cheat, lie, and horde the money. I am talking about the middle class families that honestly don’t make enough to be republican. They are not smart enough to understand that the republican party is just screwing them.

Maybe the Democrats need to resort to the the type of dirty campaigning that the Reps use. It is obvious that the public is no longer smart enough to vote based on the strength of policies!!
