Bradley Byrne is a Republican who’s running for Governor of Alabama.
In November, he made a statement that he probably thought was reasonable enough:
I believe there are parts of the Bible that are meant to be literally true and parts that are not.
He obviously underestimated the sheer blind unreasoning intolerance of the voters he needs to appeal to. So Byrne quickly decided that there were some parts of his previous statement that were meant to be literally true, and some parts that were not. This was the correction he issued this week:
I believe the Bible is true … Every word of it.
Now why doesn’t an intrepid reporter take some of the most outlandish couldn’t-possibly-be-literally-true statements from the Bible, and press Byrne about whether he believes them to be literally true?
