Can Congress Compel Valuable Testimony For Free?
by sarabeth at 11:15 am on November 30th, 2009 in GeneralThe alleged White House state dinner crashers and the director of the Secret Service will testify on Capitol Hill this week.
Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan and Tareq and Michaele Salahi will appear Thursday before the House Homeland Security Committee, its chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), announced Monday.
The Salahis can’t be too thrilled about that. At last count, they were trying to sell their story to the media for half a million dollars. And now it’s going to be splashed all over C-Span for free?
But wait! Bush administration officials and ex-officials had themselves a jolly good time during Bush’s presidency refusing to testify before all kinds of congressional committees for all kinds of reasons. Suppose the Salahis take that to a whole new level by invoking the “this thing is fucking golden” defense as they regretfully decline the House Homeland Security Committee’s invitation. Will Congress be able to compel them to give it up for free?
