Polanski To Remain In Swiss Jail

Looks like rape does have consequences in the EU, after all:

The film director Roman Polanski has lost his appeal to be freed from a Swiss prison.

The federal criminal court said today that releasing the director on bail or under house arrest posed a flight risk. The director faces possible extradition to the United States for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

He was arrested on 26 September as he arrived in Zurich to receive an award from a film festival.

“The court considered the risk that Roman Polanski might flee if released from custody as high,” the court said. “The bail offered by the appellant does not meet in its form the requirements set out by the law.”

There are, of course, many prominent public figures in the EU who continue to believe that if you drug a 13-year-old with the intent to perform a sex act upon her person, and you then perform said sex act, the fact that you are a world-famous film director means you shouldn’t have to face even the minimal punishment for your crime that resulted from an overly generous plea bargain.
