The Victim of Tragic Irony

Sarah Palin‘s valiant battle against “frivilous allegations” of ethics violations has unexpectedly made her The Victim of a Tragic Irony. (She’s already been the victim of everything else, apparently.)

To help defray her expenses for battling those “frivilous allegations”, her fans had launched a legal defense fund, the Alaska Fund Trust (no trust funds for this middle class millionaire, see?).

Now, Palin is facing a fresh ethics violation charge pertaining to the Fund Trust:

An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by accepting private donations to pay her legal debts.

The report obtained by The Associated Press says Palin is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters.

An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the “official” legal defense fund.

The fund aims to help Palin pay off debts stemming from multiple ethics complaints against her, most of which have been dismissed. Palin says she owes more than $500,000 in legal fees.

A call seeking comment from her lawyer was not immediately returned.

Comic irony, more likely, at the very most on the sad side, tragi-comic satire. We’re talking an ethically-questionable action to raise funds in defense of “multiple ethics complaints”. This woman is toast. Yeah, sure, Nixon made a comeback after his defeat by Kennedy, but Nixon was a smart guy, though ethically flawed. As ethically flawed as Palin is, she is cetainly not also by any stretch of the imagination what even an imbecile might term “smart”. Being duplicitous is not smart.
