I’m not a basketball fan, and the last time I filled in a NCAA bracket was probably in high school. But Obama’s bracket has been drawing a lot of attention, and I wouldn’t really be me if I didn’t post about it. Coach K:
“Somebody said we’re not in President Obama’s Final Four,’’ coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a lighthearted moment Wednesday as Duke prepared to face Binghamton in an East Regional first-round game in Greensboro, N.C. “As much as I respect what he’s doing, really the economy is something he should focus on more than the brackets.’’
Joking or not, Coach K is right. And Nate Silver took a look at Obama’s bracket:
There is more than one way, however, for the President to play favorites. Was Obama more inclined to select teams from swing states that were closer in last November’s election? A bit of reverse engineering of his bracket suggests that the answer is a qualified yes.
I rep Pittsburgh hard (Steelers/Pirates), but I’m not a Pitt fan at all, and not just because I attended Alabama and Penn State. Pitt just doesn’t have a tradition of winning, and they often choke big time in the NCAA tournament. The fact that Obama has Pitt going so far, coupled with his support of the Steelers over Arizona in the Super Bowl, adds to Silver’s analysis.
But like I said, I wouldn’t care if they didn’t even play. The real bracket action is over at Go Fug Yourself for Fug Madness 2009. Vote or Die.
