But Will The Fat Boy Sing?

The House Judiciary Committee announced yesterday evening that Karl Rove and Harriet Miers are going to testify before the Committee after all:

In an agreement reached today between the former Bush administration and Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Karl Rove and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers will testify before the House Judiciary Committee in transcribed depositions under penalty of perjury. The committee has also reserved the right to have public testimony from Rove and Miers. It was agreed that invocations of official privileges would be significantly limited.

In the past, Rove has offered to testify about his role in the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman, but not about the U.S. Attorney firings, so it is significant that he is expected to testify about both matters now.

Questions remain, of course.

Will Rove actually show up? The agreement is between the former Bush administration and John Conyers, Jr. Will Rove find a way to wriggle out of it (at the very last minute, of course)?

Will he actually tell the truth? Siegelman certainly doesn’t think so:

“Rove will never show up under oath and answer truthfully,” Siegelman said. “He can’t because he is guilty as sin.”

Presumably, Rove will have the sense not to offer lies, since he will be testifying under penalty of perjury (though one can always hope). But there’s always the Buttercheeks stonewall: “I do not recall.”

So it’s probably best if no one gets their hopes up very high.
