You Don’t Say

Bipartisanship!:

Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire abruptly withdrew his nomination as commerce secretary Thursday, citing “irresolvable conflicts” with President Obama’s handling of the economic stimulus and 2010 census.

“We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy,” Gregg said in a statement released by his Senate office.

Maybe Gregg’s statement will pierce the White House Bubble of Compromise. Then again, maybe not.

*** Update (by Sarabeth), 3:14 p.m. ***

Senator Jay Rockefeller IV’s office has put out the following statement:

I wish Senator Gregg had thought through the implications of his nomination more thoroughly before accepting this post.

I’ll see your Gregg, senator, and raise you an Obama: I wish President Obama had thought through the implications of this nomination more thoroughly before offering this post to a center-right Republican like Judd Gregg.

When Bobby Fischer was 13 years old, he played what is commonly applauded as the most brilliant chess game of all time, defeating ex-U.S. Open champion Donald Byrne.

On move 11, young Bobby played “a shocking and stunning move”, “one of the most magnificent moves ever made on a chessboard”.

Move 17 “brought the 13-year-old instant world-wide fame.” “To have foreseen this spectacular queen sacrifice several moves in advance – as Fischer must have done – is extraordinary”.

Maybe Barack Obama is the Bobby Fischer of 3-dimensional chess?

  2. matt says:

maybe he’s just a 13 year old school boy.

  3. sarabeth says:

Whatever else you may say about Bobby Fischer, when he was 13 he wasn’t just a 13 year old school boy.

Judd was not a mistake. Trying to pull a Stalin move of rigging future election results by Obama’s mob man Emanuel is.

Judd has a long history of being a patriot and picking country over party. So barking up the party tree doesnt work here. Obama lost a good man today that could have one him Republican support. He let the Far Far Far Left and the Stalin movement with the threat of the move of the census to the cloak of darkness (White House under Emanuel’s creative mathmatics)

Govern in the center Mr. President and don’t take lessons from 13 year old chess players. Most of the time they are just little boys. Just ask Michael Jaskson.

can i just have my pulitzer now?

  6. sarabeth says:

Frankly, I don’t think Gregg could have one him won single Republican vote.

(What a pity Sean’s attention wandered off before he got around to completing the sentence that started “He let the Far Far Far Left…” It was rich with all kinds of promise.)

  7. Juan says:

Do I smell a GOP Mole Plant in Gregg?

  8. JV says:

GOP is running the show right now. The sacrificial 3 votes in the Senate so the stimulus could pass while the GOP can still declare it’s not their bill AND they didn’t obstruct its passing was a nice touch.

  9. Ivan says:

Yes, nice touch if you consider the slimy tactics of the repugnicans to be of any positive value.
They are truly a mob of overgrown bullies. Have we forgotten so soon the spectacle of the last presidency and it’s evil, selfish and unAmerican
    actions?

can someone remind me why with majorities in both houses and a dem prez “republican support” is fucking necessary? i don’t think it’s getting through my thick skull here.

maybe obama should have thought about anything other than how to cynically win the election and then continue to fuck our country up.

  12. Rajan says:

In an interview with The Associated Press, Gregg said, “For 30 years, I’ve been my own person in charge of my own views, and I guess I hadn’t really focused on the job of working for somebody else and carrying their views, and so this is basically where it came out.”

I suspect that a similar problem may arise with Hillary Clinton, sooner or later. She is also a person of her own views on various matters and I wonder whether she will be able to stomach the situation of having to implement policies with which she may hold strong differences with Obama. Take for instance, Obama’s premature and immature overtures to Iran.

Added to the policy differences, did you view the gaffe by Jill Biden, the wife of he master-gaffer husband, Joe Biden, in some TV interview when she revealed that Obama had first offered to Biden the post of either VP or the Sec. of State and it was she who persuaded Joe Biden to choose the VP’s post (because she wanted him to spend more time at home with his family)? Of course, in Hillary’s case, there is, probably, not much of a home to come back to. Her faithful Bill, given his other well-known propensities, would be happy if she were always on the move jetting across the globe, trying to put down various international bushfires!

Hillary, therefore, is not likely to forget that she was only a second choice for the Sec. of State’s post. Also, after all the mud-slinging against each other she and Obama indulged in during the campaign, I would be much surprised if she is able to maintain really cordial relations (of course, everything will be made to look, in the mean time, very cozy to the outside world) with the White House for as long as four years.

Also, did you notice that it was Joe Biden and not Hillary who was deputed by Obama to some European Security conference which was held a couple of weeks ago to present the new administration’s foreign policy initiatives and goals. There is going to be another point of conflict arising from Joe Biden wanting to show off his so-called “foreign policy expertise” and frequently upstaging Hillary in her job. Remember that a similar simmering conflict was evident between Colin Powell and Dick Cheney throughout GWB’s first term. And Colin Powell could not wait to get out!

Possibly, even now, Hillary is regretting that she did not withdraw in time as Gregg has done and retained her senate seat which she could have held for her lifetime. Of course, she lacks seniority in the senate ranking now but that will not be the case for ever. In fact, she may be able to wield more influence as the senator from New York over the present and successive administrations over a period of time.

It is a toss-up as to who made the serious error of judgment – Obama offering the Sec. of State’s post to Hillary or Hillary accepting it. I would, therefore, be very much surprised if Hillary stays on as Sec. of State for the full 4 years of Obama’s first term.

Anyone out there willing to take a bet?

    yeah.

There are millions of us out there who love President Obama and are so relieved and grateful that he has become President. I know that he will keep his faith and his spirits high and I know that he knows he is loved and respected and trusted.

Please President Obama, do not let these diversions and distractions get you down or derail you. The devil is a liar, and knows his time is coming to an end. You are a threat to the haters and the liars, and the devil never goes down without a fight.

All those out there who are jealous, self righteous, hypocritical and just plain evil are trying with all their might to sabatoge you President Obama and the wonderful things you are trying to do for America. I do not know why for sure Senator Judd removed his name from consideration, and I am not going to pass undue or unfair judgement against him, but I do find it fishy and my gut tells me (and it is always right) that he felt a lot of pressure from the RepubliCONS, and their supporters and base, who will stop at nothing to try and make you look bad or to make you fail so they can blame you and pat themselves on the back by saying, ‘see we told you he was too young and/or too inexperienced’.

Have no worries though President Obama, because fortunately for you there are more Americans, and millions around the world who love and support you and who are way too smart to fall for that, and we are not going to allow those old tactics to rule over us, or destroy you or your Presidency.

So far you are doing a GREAT JOB President Obama and we support you, pray for you and want you to continue to do a great job and we are behind you 1000%. If you are succesful and blessed, then all Americans are successful and blessed.

Judd Gregg is a complete ass.
I live in New Hampshire and I am well aware of Gregg’s ego and self desires.
Believe me, Judd Gregg is in politics for himself.
He has even said that he does not answer to others.
    Guess what Gregg?
You have to answer to the voters who elected you.
Yes, you are a complete ass.
Get out of politics or we the people will see to it that you will never be elected to another office again.
You are not fit to even be a human being.
    See ya, scumbag!

I am a devoted Obama supporter. I think he is a genius. Gregg is on record for wanting to get rid of the Department of Commerce. In the current economy, The Dept of Commerce will likely be under great pressure. Please pick another Republican Mr. President. Let’s see who in the GOP has the self confidence to place our country over their own political interest.
    Sarabeth: good analogy.

Easy: devoted Obama supporters who think he’s a genius are neither emotionally nor intellectually equipped to pick up on the fact that comment 1 was an exercise in sarcasm (even though the tone of the update might be said to serve as a fair warning).
