A Question of Scale

In defending his indefensible decision to invite bigot Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration, Obama said:

And I would note that a couple of years ago, I was invited to Rick Warren’s church to speak, despite his awareness that I held views that entirely contrary to his when it came to gay and lesbian rights, when it came to issues like abortion…

Does Obama not understand the difference in stature between a church and a Presidential inauguration? How many people were at the church, and how many will be at (and be watching) the inauguration? And beyond this, Obama is committing a horrible sin by equating tolerance with intolerance.

He can agree to disagree with bigots, and he can have all the dialog he wants with their leaders. But elevating these agents of hate with perks like inaugural addresses in front of several hundred million people is disgusting. It’s a slap in the face to the people that were conned by Obama in the first place, and it won’t be the only one.

I can’t believe Obama did this. He has been so careful in his choices, it’s inconveivable that he would favor this man who stands against the most important liberal policies- policies Obama led us to believe he supported. It is a disgusting choice and I will not watch the inauguration now.

Terrible, terrible decision to invite such a bigot. Will white supremicist skinheads be given some ceremonial role, too? I mean, if we can agree to disagree and all…

  3. David says:

Anyone mainstream enough to get elected will never be the savior of the left. I wasn’t “conned” by Obama because he’s a centrist. He’s going to continue to disappoint people who want a real progressive, but he is better than McCain. With that standard, he’s even good.

  4. Tracy says:

HAHAHAHA – Liberals eating their own – I love it

When will you learn? So called “Progressives” do NOT represent the majority of America. Obama won because of the Bush backlash – nothing else.

  5. JD says:

Ha, I think I might just like Obama afterall. Stop overreacting like this is a hate crime, it is not you all know it, it’s a religious issue, get over yourselves. You think just because you scream hate or discrimination everyone should just duck and hide, wrong, wrong, wrong. Call it what you want, it won’t matter, I’m tired of this PC business anyway, I think a lot of people are.

Those against gay marriage have just as much right to their opinion, and Obama is “everyones” President. Do you think just because conservatives and republicans voted for him, that they suddenly have mainstream liberal views? You liberals sure assumed a lot. The man has to ride the fence or he won’t see a second term. Conservatives are getting tired of liberal views being crammed down their throats.

  6. Prophetess says:

For crying out loud! Please understand that Obama is about Change!!!
The change is this: UNITY! Darn the right and left separatist bull and let’s move on with the business at hand. Doesn’t the Bible say, as much as possible ….be at peace with all men”? Also, the Bible says, “Behold how good it is for brethren to dwell togehter in UNITY”. Both Rick and Obama are Chirstians. They may not hold the same views on every single doctrinal or social issue, but their common thread is Jesus is Lord! So that makes them brothers, and GOD says it is beautiful for brothers to dwell together in UNITY!!! So for all of you dissapointed nay-sayers, grow up and get off of similac and start chewing the real meet of the Word. By the way, Jesus was condemned for eating with sinners, but he quickly told the “Legalist” that he came for the sick not the “perfected”. I could see your point if Obama invited Bin Laden to do the invocation. GROW UP!!!

  7. sarabeth says:

So bin Laden is different because Jesus is not his Lord, huh?

The Bible really means “be at peace with all Christians”, not “be at peace with all men”?

  8. Patrick says:

Obama is smarter than most of us think. He realizes the only way to get the Christian-right to budge on the issue of gay-marriage, is to get more and more Christians to unite with the non-religious liberal movement.

He’s putting a Christian-right religious leader at his forefront, but his policies are going to be different. He is creating an illusion, and slowly over time, the Christian right is going to lose its intolerance for the cited issues.

    It’s a process people.

If Warren could think outside of his ego, HE would deny the inauguration speech. This would be a stand for his beliefs.

Obama is playing the game better than all of you, and I can’t help but laugh as we all follow a trail of cheese to the One that considers us prey.

  9. JV says:

“Conservatives are getting tired of liberal views being crammed down their throats.”

I’d consider not being able to legally marry the one you love as far more of an inconvenience than anything liberals have foisted on the poor conservatives. As Matt has stated before, there’s a difference when your “opinion” prohibits decent, law-abiding, tax-paying, and in some cases, God-fearing people from expressing their love through the institution of marriage. Which is a civil institution, by the way. Yes, as far as the US is legally concerned, your Jesus-loving fairytale church wedding is no more substantial or legally binding than that of a drunken, quickie wedding in Las Vegas presided over by an Elvis impersonator. Any outside of the legal document is all you, buddy. And that’s fantastic. Bring to your marriage whatever your personal beliefs are. Let the gays do the same. That is not shoving a liberal agenda down anyone’s throat, that is simply a live and let live policy, one that Jesus himself seems like he’d approve of.

That said, I’m not too worked up about the Warren choice. It is a slap in the face to the gay community, but the invocation is a brief and purely symbolic gesture. And as much as I love the gay family members I have, gay rights is not as high on my list of important issues as all the usuals (economy, foreign policy, Iraq, etc.). If the Obama administration starts fucking those things up (and it very well could), then I’ll be disappointed and pissed.
