If Truth Be Told

So John McCain declared on Don Imus‘ radio show yesterday (with his usual fine grammar) that Sarah Palin is “the most qualified of any that who has run recently for vice president, to tell you the truth.”

If truth be told, there are some who think the funniest part of that sentence is John McCain saying “tell you the truth”.

Another moment of Extreme Truthtelling in that same interview:

She did fine in the interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric. If I called you up and asked “What’s the Bush Doctrine?” I doubt if you would know what it is. I think you’d probably have a pretty funny answer. She did a great job in those interviews.

Or how about this:

When Imus responded that he would be able to say what newspapers he reads, which Palin was unable to do when asked by Couric, McCain suggested it was a “gotcha question,” and Palin gets her news from the Internet.

McCain didn’t explain why she was too shy to admit that she gets her news from the internet (sorry, Internet!).

And lying is probably such an everyday fact in McCain’s campaign and his life, that it never even struck him that there was any problem arguing that Palin just cheerfully lied when she said she reads all the newspapers.

As befitting a Republican running for President, McCain also delivered this with a straight face:

It’s easy to make fun of people and ask them gotcha questions. That’s fine. I understand how the game is played. But don’t think that the American people buy that baloney.

I can’t believe Imus didn’t ask him what baloney the American people do buy.
