The Crap That Passeth All Understanding
by sarabeth at 6:50 am on July 28th, 2008 in 2008 Presidential, Podium Spin, St. John McCainSomeone please explain this to me, anyone at all.
On Friday, McCain spoke to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer about Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s endorsement of a 16-month timetable for withdrawal. McCain’s appraisal: “I think it’s a pretty good timetable.”
On the assumption that McCain does not suffer from any form of dementia, senile or otherwise, McCain surely remembers that he appeared on Blitzer’s The Situation Room? And surely remembers what he said.? And is surely aware that videotape exists of him saying what he said?
So then why would McCain show up on ABC’s This Week on Sunday and tell George Stephanopoulos: “I didn’t use the word timetable.”?
What’s the percentage in flatly denying what you you said on videotape in so many words just two days ago?

John is just such a free spirit. He answers each question as it comes along and just does not file his response away in long term memory. From some of the interviews I’ve seen, I suspect there is often also no short term retention.
And as far as timelines go, his recounting of prior events indicates the concept may not be well understood. Which came first is such a difficult thing to comprehend.
