Lies, Damned Lies And Newsweek Polls

Newsweek has a new poll out, and they are reporting with great glee — I think it earns them barbecue points or something — that “53 percent of voters (and 50 percent of former Hillary Clinton supporters) believe that Obama has changed his position on key issues in order to gain political advantage.”

If you’re like me, you read that thinking to yourself “compared to what percentage for McCain?” But you should have guessed, just like I should have guessed, that there ain’t no answer to that. Because to ask that question about McCain would have jeopardized the entire accumulated barbecue points of everyone who works for Newsweek.

The funny thing, of course, is that there’s a lot more basis for asking that question about McCain. The latest version of the Official List of McCain Flip-Flops — now serially numbered for your convenience — shows 61 flip-flops, all of which were calculated to “gain political advantage”. And that was as of July 8. Which was six whole days ago. And the McCain campaign never lets the grass grow under its feet. Not when it comes to the two biggest foundations of his campaign: lying (about his record as much as Obama’s) and flip-flopping.
