McCain: Elitism And Showing His Age

by sarabeth at 6:00 am on June 30th, 2008 in 2008 Presidential, St. John McCain

I am increasingly of the opinion that politics is not the art of the possible, politics is the art of keeping a straight face as you tell complete and total whoppers. Take John McCain (though I must confess I find him increasingly hard to take).

John and Cindy McCain are not only worth many tens of millions of dollars, they also own seven different homes. But the McCain campaign manages to keep a straight face when they call Obama an elitist. (Did they learn this level of dishonesty from George Bush and his loyal gang of Bushmen? Via Karl Rove, perhaps?)

Also, despite all the headlines and TV coverage, and despite rushing in to exploit people’s exasperation with gas prices, John McCain has no idea whatsoever what the price of gas is these days. He couldn’t even hazard a guess, like “More than $4″.

It’s too bad McCain’s official campaign calendar shows only one town hall meeting for June 23. Because this is what John McCain said on June 24, by way of explaining why it doesn’t matter that he has no idea about the price of gas:

I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of town hall meetings, many as short a time ago as yesterday. I communicate with the people and they communicate with me very effectively.

So now “one” is the same as “many” in the political lexicon of John “Straight Talk” McCain?

And, frankly, anyone who uses the phrase “as short a time ago as yesterday” is not communicating with me very effectively. What’s with that phrase, anyway? He used the same archaic construction 3 days earlier. Someone should explain to him that it makes him sound 170 years old.
