Change We Can Kid Ourselves About
by matt at 2:00 pm on June 28th, 2008 in Barack ObamaI just stopped by the SF Civic Center to pick up my press pass for Pride weekend, and found that the whole place was overrun with Obama supporters.
One of the main themes and goals of this year’s Pride celebration is to defeat the November ballot initiative that would ban gay marriage in California.
Here’s Barack Obama on gay marriage:
“I’m a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman.”
When I pointed this out to a few people manning the Obama booth, no one had much of an answer. Surprise, surprise.
Update 8:30pm PDT: Why this matters.
L.A. mayor solid on gay marriage - L.A. Times (6/24/08)

With the clink of champagne glasses, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Monday became the latest politician to preside over the marriage of a same-sex couple, uniting a Hollywood producer and his five-year companion in a short ceremony at City Hall.

Villaraigosa’s ceremony uniting [Bruce] Cohen and art consultant Gabriel Catone was held before a row of cameras and occurred right before the 5 p.m. TV news.
As it happens, I went to (Catholic) high school with Gabe.
