From Exorcism to Castration: The Strange Journey Of A Republican VP Candidate

Two weeks ago, TPM wrote about Piyush “Bobby” Jindal’s hands-on experience with exorcising demons:

As others noted during his 2003 and 2007 gubernatorial campaigns (see update), in an essay Jindal wrote in 1994 for the New Oxford Review, a serious right-wing Catholic journal, Jindal narrated a bizarre story of a personal encounter with a demon, in which he participated in an exorcism with a group of college friends. And not only did they cast out the supernatural spirit that had possessed his friend, Jindal wrote that he believes that their ritual may well have cured her cancer.

(Read the full story; it’s well worth the price of admission.)

Now, Jindal has chosen to preside over castrations (albeit of the chemical variety):

Characterizing sex offenders as monsters, Gov. Bobby Jindal signed legislation Wednesday that would force convicted rapists and others to undergo chemical castration.

“I am glad we have taken such strong measures in Louisiana to put a stop to these monsters’ brutal acts,” the governor said in a prepared statement.

And that’s not all. Jindal has also come under fire from his conservative base in Louisiana for reneging on a campaign promise to not allow state legislators to give themselves a generous pay raise. At this rate, the Republicans might exorcise him from the party.

I missed this yesterday but Jindal will be presiding over physical castrations too:

This bill also provides that a court may instead order a physical castration instead of the chemical castration.

No word, though, whether he’s going to extend his hands-on approach to castration.
