Maybe part of the fascination people have with politics — apart from the fact that it impinges on our life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — is that so much of it makes so little sense?
Yes, I know I said that just yesterday, but I can’t help it if it seems to be equally relevant and true today.
Why does Steny Hoyer think anyone will be fooled if he labels his abject surrender over telecom immunity a compromise? Make any sense to you?
This so-called compromise bill is expected to be passed by the House today. Why on earth would the same Congressmen who rejected telecom immunity the last time around now turn around and cheerfully support it? How does that begin to make any kind of sense at all?
And why, pray, is Barack Obama standing quietly on the sidelines instead of leading the charge against this thoroughly misbegotten piece of legislation? Is he too busy running for president to provide real leadership on things that matter? Or is this a preview of the leadership we can expect from him as president?

I stand corrected. As the ACLU has pointed out, this is indeed a compromise bill. The Democratic leadership — not just Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi, but by their inaction, Barack Obama and Harry Reid too — has compromised our constitutional rights.
