Poll Tidbits
by sarabeth at 7:27 am on June 12th, 2008 in 2008 Presidential, St. John McCainSome interesting bits from the latest NBC/WSJ poll.
McCain has been trying to shamelessly usurp Obama’s message of change. Voters aren’t buying:
(Republican pollster Neil Newhouse) adds, “Voters are not convinced that McCain represents the change they want and that he’ll be all that different from Bush.†Indeed, according to the poll, 48 percent say it’s likely that Obama will be real change to the country. Just 21 percent say that of McCain.
In terms of personal preferences, Obama leads McCain, 47% to 41%. But ask these same people who they think is actually going to win, and you find that a non-trivial number of McCain supporters think they’re flogging a dead horse:
Fifty-four percent of the respondents in the poll — no matter whom they are voting for — believe that Obama will win in November. Only 30 percent think McCain will win.
For all the hoopla about the Obama-Clinton dream ticket, adding Clinton to the ticket doesn’t seem to have any net impact on voter’s decisions:
Twenty-two percent say that adding Clinton as Obama’s vice presidential running mate makes them more likely to vote for Obama in November; 21 percent say it makes them less likely to vote for him; and 55 percent say it makes no difference.
(For what it’s worth, Obama leads McCain 47%–41% but Obama-Clinton leads McCain-Romney 51%–42%.)
