Freudian Slip?

Continuing a roller coaster that began four years ago when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom allowed gay and lesbian couples to wed, the California Supreme Court decided not to stay its recent decision allowing gay marriage:

The California Supreme Court refused today to put its ruling allowing same-sex marriages on hold until the issue goes before state voters in November, clearing the way for gay and lesbian weddings to begin June 17.

While there was much celebrating here in the Bay Area as thousands of couples prepare for their big day on June 17th, there is a lot of work to be done in the next five months:

The justices’ unanimous vote to deny a stay sought by two conservative organizations will allow thousands of same-sex couples, from California and other states, to marry before the Nov. 4 vote on a state constitutional amendment that would overturn the ruling.

Since I’ll have no part in the Presidential election, my time and money will be directed to defeating this push to codify bigotry. But before the fight, there’s always room for hilarious irony:

The request for a stay was submitted last month by the Campaign for California Families and the Proposition 22 Legal Defense and Education Fund, which had argued in favor of the state law before the high court. Liberty Counsel, representing the Campaign for California Families, warned in its request that “the plague of same-sex marriage will soon spread rapidly across the nation” if the ruling takes effect.

Plague? I wonder if these knuckle-draggers even know what the word means: “A widespread affliction or calamity, especially one seen as divine retribution.”

Who is God punishing here? I mean, I wouldn’t wish marriage on anyone, but if teh gheys want to get down like that, I’m all for it. So is God smiting them in a “be careful what you wish for” kind of way? Or is he raining the figurative sulphur down on his biggest fans for their apparent willful misunderstanding of His word? I guess we’ll have to wait for some farmer in Kansas to grow an ear of corn in the shape of the Village People to know for sure.

Until then, this will probably be the most fabulous plague ever.
