What on earth does that mean?

Maybe the only way to make sense of it is by a process of elimination.

He couldn’t be blaming himself for later learning that it was. Or for passing along information he didn’t know was false. Or for going to the podium.

Which leaves only “putting myself in the position”. So I guess the headline should read: “McClellan blames himself for accepting Press Secretary job”.
