First lady criticizes Burmese crisis response – USAToday (5/5/08):
First lady Laura Bush, a harsh critic of the military junta in Burma, slammed the regime Monday for failing to issue a timely warning to its citizens in the path of a deadly cyclone.
Laura Bush (9/8/05):
First lady Laura Bush on Thursday denounced critics who say race played a role in the federal government’s slow response to victims of Hurricane Katrina, calling the accusations “disgusting.â€
It does of course get much worse, we are talking about a Bush after all:
“I’m worried that they [Burma] won’t even accept U.S. aid,” she said in the White House press room. “And I urge the government to accept aid from the United States and from the entire international community right now while the needs of their people are so critical.”
In 2005, despite a statement from the State Department, (“no offer that can help alleviate the suffering of the people in the afflicted area will be refused.“) it was revealed that offers were in fact being refused:
However, in Moscow, a Russian official said the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency had rejected a Russian offer to dispatch rescue teams and other aid.
And, of course:
Offers to help came from 145 countries and 12 international organizations. The US did accept help from its top allies around the globe, but CREW’s report shows it left unclaimed hundreds of thousands of prepared meals, water pumps, doctors and medicine.
I guess the needs of New Orleanians weren’t “so critical.”
No bottom in sight for the The Laura Bush Hypocrisy Market™.
