It’s Official

Interesting results out of a new poll conducted by CBS News: It might actually be easier for an African-American to be elected president than it would be for a woman.
Survey respondents were asked two separate questions, whether — all other things being equal — they would prefer to vote for a man or a woman and whether they would prefer to vote for a white candidate over a black candidate. Five percent of those polled said they would prefer a white candidate; 2 percent said they’d prefer a black candidate. On the other hand, 17 percent said they’d prefer to vote for a man over a woman, while only 3 percent said they’d prefer the woman.
As you will have noted, when asked the black question, 93% of respondents had no preference (or kept their lips zipped; unfortunately, they haven’t disclosed that breakdown), while only 80% did that with the woman question.
What I found interesting too was the difference between “what’s your preference” and “what about people you know”. Conventional wisdom, of course, holds that any racist or misogynist attitudes respondents hold are more likely to be expressed behind the fig leaf of the latter phrasing.
But when it comes to race, the personal preference was 5% to 2% for a white person, while the “people you know” estimate was 33% to 56%. People have managed to thoroughly overcome any racial presidential prejudices they may have once had, but they are too shy to say so directly?
With the gender results, the personal preference was 17% to 3% for a person with testicles, but the “people you know” estimate was a dead heat at 45% to 46%. People really have no misogynist bias, but some clowns decided to have a little fun with the person conducting the poll?
