I’m shooting the Amgen Tour of California this week for a few different media outlets, and I can tell you that the world of professional cycling is not much different than politics.
Team Astana’s Levi Leipheimer addresses his hometown crowd after the Amgen Tour of California Stage 1 in Santa Rosa, CA. Leipheimer, winner of last year’s Tour of California, and third place finisher in the Tour de France, is in danger of being excluded from this year’s TDF for the doping scandal that plagued Team Astana last year, when Leipheimer was still riding for Discovery Channel. Team Astana 2008 should be included in the 2008 Tour De France. The team is not the 2007 team that did not fooolw the rules, it is a different group of riders managed by a different team manager. The 2008Team Astana should not be punished for something that they were not a part of. This team is one of the best stage race teams in the world. The Tour De France will be greatly lessened without Team Astana participating. Hopefully, the powers that be will come to their senses.
