George’s All-time Record
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on January 31st, 2008 in Bush Man DateGeorge W. Bush may not be the smartest President we’ve ever had, or the most popular, or the most admired, or the most successful. But there’s one thing no one can take away from the man, one singular achievement that promises to stand as a Presidential Record forever: he’s the signing-statement-est President there’s ever been. And it’s probably safe to add: the signing-statement-est President there ever will be. Because he hasn’t just set new records; he’s totally pulverized previous records, consigned them to dust.
In the first seven years of his presidency, Bush has signed 151 signing statements, in which he sought to casually divorce himself from a staggering 1149 provisions of law.
And this, apparently, is more than all the other 42 presidents combined.
For some reason, Dear Leader had gone into a shell: there were no signing statements for practically a whole year. He bounced back to his normal self in December 2007, though. So as of now, it’s 151 or 1149 and counting. (Go, George, go! Watch George go. Isn’t George special? Clap for George.)
