Holding up a mirror to the times is Time magazine. Here’s the opening sentence of a new report on the CIA’s late, lamented enhanced-interrogation tapes:

Taking a public stand against torture confers little political advantage for members of Congress — and it carries the risk of being branded as soft on terrorism.

There’s no doubt we are not who we used to be. Do we even remember who we were? Are we going to be able to get back to where we once belonged once this infection is cleansed from our polity?
