[...] And Blackwater guards learn, by personal experience, that the U.S. government has given them a free license to engage in the ultimate bloodsport—hunting man. You shoot, you kill. And you live to shoot and kill another day. Is it at all far-fetched to speculate that after a few years this was the scuttlebutt in mercenary recruiting circles too? To speculate that Blackwater attracted the kind of scum to whom this bloodsport would appeal. That, by a process of self-selection, Blackwater naturally ended up hiring the kind of scum who would perpetrate something like the September 16 Nisoor Square killings, just for fun. Natural Selection a la Blackwater [...]

You should care what happens over there.

Blackwater has already been deployed on US soil (during the recent SoCal fires) and now they are in the running to get a contract for the new War on Drugs on US soil.

This "we were fired upon" Iraq meme is similar to the "resisting arrest" charge always filed by police depts. whenever they arrest someone, even if--or perhaps particularly if--they're lying on the ground, or sitting, arms linked with others' in the typical "passive resistance" pose.

When the Air Force bombed the al Jazeera Baghdad bureau on April ?, the day before the troops arrived in Baghdad, they said the same thing: "We were taking fire from [the bushes; the building; the rooftop; the back yard; the courtyard; the kitchen window; the palmetto grove; the palm tree; the bound-and-gagged POW--pick one]
In 1991, when our "smart bunker-buster bombs" that were targeting Saddam (I think a violation of the Geneva Accords of 1977?) hit a shelter filled with some 314 Iraqis, 130 of them children, the US response was "Oops."
And whenever asked about Iraqis killed, maimed &/or wounded, the military would say (I think this was Tommy Franks' line) "We don't do body counts." Of course, all civilian deaths and injuries are "collateral damage." So it should hardly be a surprise that the Blackwater, Dyncorp etc. mercenaries, and maybe even rogue soldiers, use Iraqis for target practice.
As I recall, when George I shocked and awed Baghdad (for the Kuwait war) in 1991, not only did they knock out bridges, the airports, but they knocked out the electric generator plants for Baghdad (another Geneva Conventions no-no)--which took out water purification systems, sewage treatment systems. Hospitals and mosques, civilian homes, etc., were also hit. This, of course, was to drive the Iraqis out of Kuwait--which had given George I his first off-shore oil-drilling contract. Baghdad, of course, is only a few hundred miles from Kuwait. Barry Lando, in his book Web of Deceit: The history of Western Complicity in Iraq, From Churchill to Kennedy to George W. Bush details how George I lied and lied about the Iraqi war and actually derailed all of Saddam's efforts to save face and withdraw. Poppy's poll #s were going down and he needed a war. Chapter 6: No Exit--The Gulf War, August 1990-March 1991.
It is interesting to note that Joe Wilson (Valerie Plame's hubby) was a deputy attache to Iraq--April Glaspie was his boss, but she was on vacation after helping to sucker Iraq into the Kuwait trap--during the time Poppy was setting up his trap for Saddam and sabotaging heavy-duty diplomatic efforts to forestall a war.
Poppy wanted a war, so he could get Saddam and wipe out his army. Sort of a "Like Father, Like Son" kinda thing. Seems that duplicity runs in the family. Sigh.

It is really sad when the people who we pay so highly are so totally lacking in either morality or professionalism.

We really don't know what happens over there. However if thery no longer hire Blackwater the unemployables whom they protect will be too frightened to go get in the way of the military simply for campaign photo ops and pontificating upon tactics and strategies. .

This will result in saving the costs of these junkets, and keep the unemploybles at their desks in the congress.

Although I'd want Blackwater to stay the collateral benefits of their leaving are too womderful to comtemplate.
