Power
by matt at 6:00 am on November 1st, 2007 in Bush Man DateJust over one month ago, I saw the results of a new poll:
Polls overseas show Muslims’ views of the United States going through the floor. Even in NATO ally Turkey, the United States’ favorable rating is down to 9 percent, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll, down from 30 percent five years ago and 52 percent in 2000.
Knowing that Bush BFF Karen Hughes was charged with making the numbers go in the opposite direction, I wondered aloud:
At what point does Hughes resign, apologize, and/or return her salary for the last two-and-a-half years? At what point do Republicans, with accountability and responsibility supposed planks in their platform, call for her to do any of the above?
It’s difficult to imagine anyone producing less results than Ms. Hughes. Even Rumsfeld managed to get the Army and Marines into Baghdad. To rate as poorly as Hughes, Rummy’s Iraq war plan would have had to involve invading Kuwait and converting all Kuwaitis to Buddhism.
Seems I didn’t have to wait long for my answer:
Karen Hughes, who led efforts to improve the U.S. image abroad and was one of President Bush’s last remaining advisers from the close circle of Texas aides, will leave the government at the end of the year, she told The Associated Press.
I don’t imagine she’ll be returning any of her obviously unearned salary, but at least she’ll be off the public tit. Sometimes the awesome power of this blog terrifies even me.
*UPDATE 10:30am PDT: From Wednesday’s White House press briefing:
Q So in your view, the U.S. image in the Arab world has improved under Karen Hughes?
MS. PERINO: We are making progress.
This is what normal people call a lie.
