Obama said he would vote for a Peruvian trade agreement next week, in response to a question from a man in Londonderry, NH who called NAFTA and CAFTA a disaster for American workers. He said he supported the trade agreement with Peru because it contained the labor and environmental standards sought by groups like the AFL-CIO, despite the voter’s protests to the contrary.
Peru Free-Trade Agreement Set to Move in House After Delays Bloomberg (9/14/07):
In the U.S. there is a similar divide among labor groups. The AFL-CIO, the country’s largest labor federation, testified this week that it won’t support the Peru free-trade agreement, but won’t work to defeat it, either.
Unions that aren’t members of the AFL-CIO, led by the Teamsters, are gearing up to fight the Peru agreement, said Yvette Pena Lopes, the group’s top trade lobbyist.
