“Fast and loose”, of course, is just a polite term for irresponsible dishonesty.
The headline for the WaPo blog post in “The Talk: Highlights from the Sunday shows” reads: Pelosi Says House Close to Overriding Bush on SCHIP.
The actual story:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Sunday that Democrats are fewer than 20 votes short of overriding a presidential veto and expanding the country’s health insurance program for children. She added that her caucus would work over the next two weeks “to try to peel off” about 14 Republicans to move closer to achieving that goal.
They are about 20 votes short. They are only targeting 14 Republicans to peel off.
Doesn’t sound like they are anywhere close to overriding Bush’s veto, does it? Maybe the headline should have said: Pelosi Sees No Hope Of Overriding Bush on SCHIP For Now.
