Please Don’t Swallow

It’s bad enough that so-called journalists from so-called respectable media outlets insist on putting on kneepads, assuming the position and performing favors of the oral variety for this administration. But surely they don’t have to actually swallow (especially in full public view)?

Here’s Michael Abramowitz of WaPo in a Bush-and-Iraq puff piece:

Congressional Republicans, especially conservatives, are convinced that Bush has gained strength on Iraq over the past few months. “I think he’s improved his position,” said Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.), who is expected to run for the Senate seat of retiring Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.). “You’ve got Democrats now saying, ‘Look, guys, we cannot do some of the things we had wanted to do.’ “

Bush’s strength doesn’t come from how badly the knees of Congressional Democrats are knocking. It comes from the support he receives from the American people. (And if that sounds patronizing, the fact that it needs to be said at all, and to someone who was a National editor of WaPo for five years, is its own sad commentary on the sorry state of our media.)

Just because Davis III says something doesn’t make it true, Mr. Abramowitz. It may come as a rude shock to you, but Davis III probably has a partisan agenda. Maybe you haven’t heard this before, but you are not supposed to. Political expediency will often lead Davis III to say things which are not entirely true. What’s your excuse for approvingly broadcasting his garbage, Mr. Abramowitz?
