Gone-Zo

Adios, douchebag:

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Let me be as clear as I can: No replacement gets confirmed until Congress gets every last document they requested and every witness they subpoenaed. It’s that simple.

If he lived the “American Dream” as he said in his departing speech, I don’t think I want to live it anymore…There’s gotta be something wrong with living in incompetence and dishonesty being described as the “Dream”…I think even in his departing speech, he did as much damage to American people as he did during whole of his tenure…Is that the standard we are supposed to live up to? The American Dream?

GG - agreed. I didn’t watch his parting speech but due to the fact that mc is out shooting up New Orleans (in the taking pictures sense, not the west coast cap peelers sense) i was obligated to watch the president’s response and report back. i’m glad it was short — though it may still be the longest time i’ve been able to stomach him. it was so disgusting to watch him blame “politics” for alberto’s departure, as if his own political bs had nothing to do with it. whatever. bring sarabeth back - i’m sure this is the last time she’ll go on vaca in august!

Well, the damnfool showed no signs of resigning on my watch, so maybe going on vacation was the smartest thing I ever did.

Already planning the next vacation, therefore.

I’ve resolutely stayed away from the news for the last 12 days, but this managed to pierce my bubble (thanks to a friend who sent me a “congratulations” email).

Funny, but this was the friend I’d gone to visit in March when I posted my premature obituary for Gonzo’s political career, convinced he wouldn’t last the week.

What a guy! Lied through his teeth (and those of others) to the bitter end:

A senior administration official said Monday that Gonzales, who was in Washington, had called the president in Crawford, Texas, on Friday to offer his resignation. The president rebuffed the offer, but said the two should talk face to face on Sunday.

Gonzales and his wife flew to Texas, and over lunch on Sunday the president accepted the resignation with regret, the official said.

On Saturday night Gonzales was contacted by his press spokesman to ask how the department should respond to inquiries from reporters about rumors of his resignation, and he told the spokesman to deny the reports.

White House spokesmen also insisted on Sunday that they did not believe that Gonzales was planning to resign. Aides to senior members of the Senate Judiciary Committee said over the weekend that they had received no suggestion from the administration that Gonzales intended to resign.

As late as Sunday afternoon, Gonzales himself was denying through his spokesman that he was quitting. The spokesman, Brian Roehrkasse, said Sunday that he telephoned the attorney general about the reports of his imminent resignation “and he said it wasn’t true — so I don’t know what more I can say.”

When official spokesmen start making it clear that it’s their boss who’s lying, not them, what more is there to be said?

Ah, what the hell, I’ll say it anyway.

Paraphrasing an old folk song: “Alberto, let your head hang low.”
