Smarter “Experts” Please
by matt at 7:00 am on June 30th, 2007 in Bush Man DateBush loses on immigration; his presidency fading fast too McClatchy Washington Bureau (6/28/07):
“It’s the incredible shrinking presidency. He’s lost battles in the courts. He’s lost battles in Iraq. He’s lost battles on Capitol Hill,” said Paul Light, a professor of public service at New York University.”His bank account is empty and there’s nowhere to go for more. I think his presidency is essentially over.”
Depends on the definition of over? Maybe Prof. Light hasn’t been paying close enough attention. Bush has had sub-50 approval ratings for more than two years, and sub-40 ratings for more than one. With his aggressive use of signing statements and executive orders and his general contempt for the rule of law, Bush’s Presidency won’t be over until it’s over. Maybe Light would like to bet me on the level of damage Bush can do in the next 18 months.

Bush’s presidency may not be over when it’s over. He, Cheney and his operatives in the Justice Department and Supreme Court could mess with the ‘08 election.

And with this gang, there doesn’t seem to be any barrier between could and would when it comes to such things.
Also, Prof. Light should explain that Bush’s presidency is essentially over to the families of the 100 U.S. soldiers who were pawn-sacrificed in Iraq in June. And the 100 more who will be pawn-sacrificed in July, etc.
He should also explain that to the families of the 80 or so Guantanamo detainees who we have finally acknowledged should never have been held there in the first place, but who we are now unable to release (home country won’t take them, or — supreme irony — home country would torture them). First we held them there against their will. Now we’re holding them there against our will. Only in Bush’s America…
