Sense, Nonsense And No Nonsense: A Contrast In Styles
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on June 27th, 2007 in Cheney, War on TerrorGuantanamo has been much in the news lately. And, conscientious blogger that I am, I have duly read vast quantities of that prose. My favorite paragraph of the whole lot comes from WaPo’s Josh White and Robin Wright:
Still, officials said the discussions are not yet at a decision point because too many issues remain unresolved. Justice officials have argued against moving Guantanamo detainees to the United States because it would immediately grant the alleged terrorists habeas corpus rights, which would launch another round of legal battles in U.S. federal courts. Homeland Security officials have opposed such a move because it would mean bringing some of the people on the nation’s terror watch list — including the highest-level detainees that the United States has in its custody, such as Khalid Sheik Mohammed — inside U.S. borders. Cheney’s office also has vehemently opposed bringing the detainees into this country.
Just gotta love the progression of those arguments–from Justice officials to Homeland Security officials to Cheney’s office.
The Justice Dept. offers a reasonable reason. One may not agree with it, but it’s a reasonable thing for them to say. The Homeland Security Dept. offers up the entirely charming proposition that we oppose bringing them into the U.S. because it would mean bringing them into the U.S. Cheney’s office not only offers no reason, but White and Wright don’t even feel the need to note that, or to explain why there’s no explanation. At this point in the Cheney Bush presidency, it does not even need to be remarked that Cheney’s office never offers no reasons to nobody.
