Forever And A Day?
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on June 1st, 2007 in War on TerrorYou have to hand it to the NCIS. They’re nothing if not thorough. Remember the terrorist attack on Guantanamo last June? The one where three of the worst of the worst simultaneously launched acts of asymmetrical warfare against us?
Three foreign prisoners were found dead on Saturday (June 10) after hanging themselves with clothing and bedsheets in the first deaths at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, since the prison opened in January 2002, U.S. defense officials said.
Those deaths are still under investigation. It’s been just about a year. Wonder what’s holding up the investigation? How hard can it be to investigate deaths that occurred in custody in Guantanamo? It’s not like they are going to question other inmates (because you cannot give any credence to what they say). Which only leaves guards and their commanding officers. So what’s the problem: witnesses not cooperating? Facts not cooperating?
Or is the report all written up, but just too embarrassing? This didn’t seem to receive much attention in the press at the time:
[T]he detainees who hanged themselves last week were in cells where “there’s nothing on the ceiling and the meshing is far too small to allow a sheet or anything to be tied to it. They would have had to slowly strangulate themselves by wrapping a sheet around the toilet bowl or something like that.â€
Presumably if the investigation were completed and a report issued, there’s some danger of these details now being splashed all over the media. And it’s probably not a real good time for stuff like this to be getting wide publicity.
So maybe this investigation will indeed take forever and a day.
