They Also Served, They Also Died
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on May 28th, 2007 in Iraq WarThe professed grief of our politicians for U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq selectively embraces the young. The phrases heard most often are phrases like “our sons and daughters†and “young lives†and “taken from us in their primeâ€.
So who will remember the mothers and fathers, the uncles and aunts, this Memorial Day (apart from their sons and daughters, their nieces and nephews)?
Who will mourn the fifty-somethings?
People like 59-year old Sgt. 1st Class William David Chaney, of Schaumburg, IL.
Or 54-year old Sgt. Roger Dale Rowe of Bon Aqua, TN.
Or 50-year old Sgt. 1st Class John W. Marshall of Hinesville, GA.
Or 52-year old Sgt. 1st Class Merideth Howard of Alameda, CA.
Or any of the other 21 fifty-somethings who are among the 3813 killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
