Specter On Gonzales

I was wondering whether to add a nullus to the title, but decided against it.

Here’s what Arlen Specter said:

“I have a sense that when we finish our investigation, we may have the conclusion of the tenure of the attorney general,” Specter said during a committee hearing. “It’ll be clear even to the attorney general and the president that we’re looking at a dysfunctional department which is vital to the national welfare.”

Surely, he could have put it a little better than that? How about this version, which is only a little more politically supercharged:
“Remember 9/11? The Justice Department is a vital component of homeland security. Emasculate federal law enforcement, and you leave gaping national security holes that terrorists will be quick to exploit. Remember al Qaeda? We are all confident President Bush doesn’t intend to leave us vulnerable to terrorists attacks on American soil for one second longer than necessary. Remember “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US”? He still is, of course. And there’s no way President Bush will make that mistake again.”

Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Democrats framed it like that? And kept hammering the message over and over again.

Also, does anyone know which investigation he means? The prosecutor firings? That isn’t coming to a conclusion any time soon. I wonder if Specter has a sense that the conclusion of the tenure of this attorney general will occur on or about the date President Bush leaves office?

Then again, sometimes I wonder if Specter has sense, period.
