The Justice Department has apparently decided not to oppose the House Judiciary Committee’s request to grant immunity to Monica Goodling:
Today the Department of Justice gave notice that it would not object to the House Judiciary Committee’s grant of use immunity for Monica Goodling. … The Committee will be moving expeditiously to apply for the court order so that we can schedule a hearing promptly.
I’m really not sure what to make of this. Sounds too good to be true. Maybe they have something else up their sleeve?
Goodling’s testimony could happen before Memorial Day.
Meanwhile, Alberto Gonzales will have to testify before the House Judiciary Committee this Thursday, knowing that Goodling will be coming along soon to tell her side of the story. Keeping other witnesses honest was always perceived as part of the reason why Goodling should be granted immunity. Though that may not apply to the guy whose notes for his testimony seem to consist only of one index card which says “I do not recall!”
