Until What Do Them Part?

All it takes is some sort of major milestone, some big symbolic event. So some Republicans are starting once again to talk the talk we’ve heard so many times before these past many Friedmans:

Rep. Ray LaHood (R., Ill.), who has been loyal to the president, said he and other Republican lawmakers will have to reassess their support if military commander Gen. David Petraeus and the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki don’t show more progress by September.

I’ll resist the temptation to take off on “more than what“?

It’s a cruel analogy, but unfortunately all too true–this reminds me of nothing so much as battered wife syndrome. Except that they are not even saying to themselves and their battered, traumatized kids: “He does it just one more time, we’re definitely leaving!” They’re going: “He does it three more times, we’re definitely going to start threatening to leave!”

We’ve already had way too many deaths; it’s clearly not going to be deaths do them part. So what is it going to take?

Didn’t matt have a couple of posts leading up to the 2004 presidential election about battered voter syndrome? Battered legislator syndrome seems just as plausible.
