Selective Disgust

A little late to the party:

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday that radio host Don Imus‘ comments about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team were “disgusting” and she was pleased he was fired.

Imus called the women players “nappy-headed hos” — racist, sexist remarks that resulted in a barrage of protests and ultimately in the outspoken host losing his CBS Radio show, which was also televised.

“I’m very glad that there was, in fact, a consequence. I think that this kind of coarse language doesn’t belong anywhere in reasonable dialogue between reasonable people,” Rice said in an interview with syndicated radio show host Michael Medved.
[…]
“It gets ruined by this disgusting — and I’ll use the word ‘disgusting’ — comment which doesn’t belong in any polite company and certainly doesn’t belong on any radio station that I would listen to,” she added.

Funny, I don’t remember Ms. Rice weighing in on Barbara Bush’s disgusting comments about those displaced by hurricane Katrina:

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: “Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we’re going to move to Houston.”

Then she added: “What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

“And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this–this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them.”

And as far as Rice’s comment that it “doesn’t belong on any radio station that I would listen to,” she was on the air with Medved, who said of Islam:

I am saying there are problems with Islam, as a faith, as a culture, as a vision of civilization, or actually a vision of barbarism in the world, there are problems with Islam that go very, very deep.

Ironic. Doubly so when you take into account that Rice’s job, when she’s actually doing it, is diplomacy with the same people that Medved likes to smear.

Is it really another year and a half?

Any day now Dana Perino will tell us how “disgusting” Bush has found he finds the whole thing.

It’s a shame that we see so much micromanagement when real leadership is needed. By itself the comment would have been fine, but looking at her non existing reaction about the Katrina victims it is clear that Ms. Rice decided to “Go with the flow” and stopped leading.

But I am not sure if she ever did. Maybe less out of ability but the fact that people who are micromanaged themselves can’t be leaders.
