Bizarre

Hi Matt,
I work for General Clark. I am trying to figure out who sent you this email and how they got your email. They did not get the email from General Clark. I really need to find out who is doing this b/c they are doing this without Gen. Clark’s permission. Major donor lists in CA may have floated around to our CA fundraising staff during the campaign, and I am aware some of them are now working for Clinton. If they used your email in this way without our permission, I need to shut it down.
Can you give me a call at XXXXXXXXXX? I would like to discuss this ASAP, and I would appreciate you posting that Gen. Clark’s office absolutely denies giving your email address over
.
Let me say that the emailer appears to be legit, and i responded to the email and mentioned that I’m doing a bit of independent reporting on this. I replied to the fundraising email in an effort to allow the sender to explain his/her actions, and if I don’t hear back in a few hours, he/she is going on blast. I’ll also add that this “Major donor lists in CA may have floated around to our CA fundraising staff during the campaign” is sloppy, and no way to run a campaign. Speaking as someone who spent the latter part of the 90s in advertising with a focus on online, there is no reason for anyone to have access to individuals’ email addresses, much less someone who, as may be the case here, can turn around and sell/use them elsewhere. This is apparently a symptom of the poor campaign Clark’s people put together - admittedly on short notice - in 03-04.
More as it happens.
Update 11:00am PDT: From the sender of the fundraising email:
The list was put together by those who signed the email note as well as those on the invitation from a variety of their own personal files and previous campaign relationships.
I can say for certain that the address that the email was sent to was not even in anyone’s “personal files,” and as far as “campaign relationships,” I didn’t deal with anyone outside of official campaign channels. That someone outside the Clark camp would have this address is by definition, unethical.
It does now seem likely that the Clark campaign as it exists now, had nothing to do with this besides sloppy list management technique between 04 and now.
Update 11:15am PDT: hahaha:
I meant to ask, would you like to be removed from the list?
my response:
i’d vote for hillary clinton if edwards, dodd, and richardson all dropped out, and al gore and wes clark decided they didn’t want to run.
i’d donate money to hillary clinton if…well, my imagination is clearly not up to the task
