BREAKING? Wes Clark Not Running

**Please see update here.**

I always wanted to title a post like that. And I’m not kidding, I think I have definitive proof that General Wesley Clark is not going to run for President in 2008.

I use Sneakemail addresses anytime I have to give an email to a merchant/candidate/etc, so I have the ability to delete an address if someone decides to sell their email list to a spammer. Well, I just got the following email to an address that I have only ever used to donate to/communicate with the Clark organization:

Friends,

For all of you concerned about the current administration’s domestic
policies, for those who are troubled by the war in Iraq and the low regard
in which America is held by the international community, it’s time for a
change. It’s time for a bold new vision; time for a competent, strong,
experienced, intelligent and compassionate voice in the White House. It’s
time for Senator Hillary Clinton to be our next President of the United
States!

The Senator has been to northern California several times in the past weeks
and she will be coming to our area again soon. In the meantime, we are
pleased and excited to tell you that President Clinton will be here on April
15th for a fundraiser on behalf of Senator Clinton’s campaign for the
presidency.

It’s a reality that all of the campaigns are faced with the enormous task of
raising so much money in order to compete in this election. The Senator has
done an extraordinary job in this respect but there is much to be done. The
accelerated primary process which includes many states early in the cycle
requires candidates to travel nationally, run advertising and build
fundraising and field operations in many states simultaneously.

We are thrilled President Clinton will be here and hope you will join us!

Since Clark’s biggest obstacle to another run would be money, there’s no way he would have given his email list to the Clintons for the purposes of fundraising. I’ve been saying for months that he was going to sit this one out, and I think this is as close to proof that Clark isn’t running as there’s going to be, short of an announcement from the man himself.

…adding:

$4,600 (preferred seating)
$2,300 (preferred seating)
$1,000

…adding again because some Clarkies are upset: I am a huge Clark supporter. Financially and via an endorsement I wrote here three years ago. The email I received was to a randomly generated email address, and was only ever used for one purpose. It has never received email from any other source or been spammed even once in the 3+ years Ihave had it. What do you think are the odds of the lone non-Clark email coming from another politician? Those odds are so small as to not exist.

Hmm, that is interesting. I may owe you 5 bucks, but I’m not going to the ATM until I hear it from the man himself.

  2. Kat says:

I have been on Clark mailing lists from the Draft Clark days through today. I’ve never received an email from Hillary Clinton.

    Believe me, I would have.

Your speculation is not an indication of anything.

  3. matt says:

    Believe me, I would have.

i don’t think i will. let me ask you: were you a major clark donor?

  4. pia says:

I too am on Wesley Clark’s email list and have been since the Draft Clark days. I have never received an email from Hilary Clinton – nor would want to!

As far as Wes Clark not running – just have a little patience – you may be very surprised.

  5. KayCeSF says:

I don’t see how this is proof positive of anything. I’m a Clark Supporter since the Draft Clark days as well, and I have never received a Hillary Clinton email.

Wes would never do this. He would let his supporters know that he’s decided not to run and he has not done that, and in fact has indicated he is considering a run. His supporters wait for him to make the decision.

Keep the faith. Wes has recently said, “Trust me.” Anyone that has been a loyal supporter knows we can, in fact, trust him above all else.

  6. dj says:

You’re blowing up the wrong tree. I get e-mail from people I don’t know all the time – with really weird addresses as mine; I also get some from Wes Clark and WesPAC. I’ve never gotten an e- mail from Hillary Clinton and don’t ever expect to. Can’t stand her. Sorry. Sound’s like you’re sort of trying to make trouble where none exists. If you knew Wes Clark, you would know his organization would NEVER do crap like this. Time to get edumacated.

  7. Winnie H. says:

Matt — I, too, have been on the Clark mailing lists since 2003, am a charter member of WesPAC and have donated large sums of money. I also have a specific email that I only use to contribute to General Clark. I have never received any emails from Hillary Clinton, so I don’t believe that General Clark given my email address to her.

“Definitive proof” is a pretty strong statement. Given my experience, I don’t think you’ve got that kind of proof.

I’m waiting to hear from General Clark himself, and the last I heard, he was still considering running. In fact, a fellow Clark supporter just told me today that he spoke to the General this week and Wes gave strong indications that he wanted to run.

  8. Kat says:

General Clark helped a lot of local and statewide candidates in 06. Is it possible one of those is now a secret Hillary supporter?

I don’t think Clarkies are upset so much as they want to reassure you that this is not a correct conclusion to jump to.

  9. Kat says:

    Believe me, I would have.

    Yes

  10. matt says:

General Clark helped a lot of local and statewide candidates in 06. Is it possible one of those is now a secret Hillary supporter?

he didn’t share the list i’m on because i got no email to that address.

I don’t think Clarkies are upset

i couldn’t care less. and the bet i offered a while back is still open to all takers. any amount, any time, any place.

  11. Kat says:

I’ll take you up on that, and raise it to $10.00.

    :)

  12. Joe says:

Get mail from both HRC and WKC at different addresses (the HRC mail goes to BushGW@gmail.com.) I’d notice if my joe@clark08.us addy showed up on HRC spews.

  13. matt says:

    so, take the bet.

  14. Joe says:

I would but online gambling is a felony in the State of Washington. I’m willing to bet a cartalk.com virtual dope slap though.

  15. RP says:

Congrats on having the most comments ever on a post here. :p

  16. matt says:

I would but online gambling is a felony in the State of Washington

there’s a word for this kind of cowardice

Congrats on having the most comments ever on a post here

    please

  17. sarabeth says:

okay, so we may still have a ways to go.

the way it’s looking right now, though, I wouldn’t want to bet we won’t get there

RP may be guilty only of “premature jocularity”

  18. Shortie says:

    I’m a WesPAC and Clark 04 contributor.

I’ve gotten NO emails from Hillary…

  19. sac says:

No, you must be Don Francisco.

  20. Joe says:

there’s a word for this kind of cowardice

    Er, non-recidivist?

  21. matt says:

“pussy.” but if you don’t believe in gambling, fair enough. i just think that you all can call bullshit all you want, we won’t know for sure for a bit. i’m willing to bet any amount of money that i’m right. and this is coming from someone who was an active clark supporter/donor/fundraiser last time, and someone who would have supported him this time had he, at minimum, give signals anytime in the month after the 06 elections.

  22. Joe says:

Don’t get misogynistic. Use “limp-dick” instead.

  23. matt says:

    limp dick pussy?

  24. Joe says:

    That doesn’t fit.

  25. reader says:

Hello I am on the Clark email address list not user of sneakmail; I get regular email from WesPac Wes Clark http://securingamerica.com

I haven’t been contacted by Clintonistas
    and Wes said he was waiting for preconditions before he would announce; as of yesterday at the speech he gave in Ca. 4/5/2007 he said he wants to run; you are publishing speculation;

  26. Doug says:

I’ve been involved with General Clark since the very earliest days of the “Draft” movement. I’ve never received a single Hillary solicitation while I get as many as five or six emails a day from my various Clark groups. Conjecture that WesPAC, Securing America, or any Clark group is selling its list is just plain fiction.

As far as Clark leaning toward not running, I saw him speak only this week, and when asked who he’d support, he replied with a wry, knowing grin, “That depends who’s running.” The roughly two thousand assembled at the Flint Center in Cupertino, California roared with laughter and applause. I think that Wes is honestly and truly thinking about running. He is a man of great depth and honor, and he will not undertake any serious enterprise without very careful consideration.

A number of things play into his decision (and yes, money is one), most important is having his family completely on board. If Gert’s body language is any indication, I’d place the chances at about 51+ percent that he’ll enter the race sometime this summer. I hope he does.

  27. matt says:

sounds scientific. and relying on expected value, you should take my bet, and go big.

  28. Richard Jordan says:

What is his position on climate change? All the emails I receive have no contact information — I assume with no statements ever on climate change he is not interested in the crisis.

I am chairing a major UN conference for NGOs in September on climate change.

  29. matt says:

I assume with no statements ever on climate change he is not interested in the crisis.

unfounded assumptions and asking a random blog for positions: it’s great that you are in charge of a major UN conference.

    don’t hurt yourself.
