Unintended Alarmism

I think this was meant to be reassuring:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on February 15: “We are not, you know, for the umpteenth time, we are not looking for an excuse to go to war with Iran. We are not planning a war with Iran.”

But I really don’t know… We wouldn’t be looking, would we, if we had already found one or more perfectly good excuses? And we hadn’t exactly planned for the Iraq war either, had we? Didn’t stop us from going to war. And, at the time of going to press, we show no signs of ever coming back.
