The Futility Of Being A Senator
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on January 25th, 2007 in Iraq WarSenator Lugar, commenting on the nonbinding resolution passed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee:
“I am not confident that President Bush’s plan will succeed,” said Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, senior Republican on the committee.
But he also said he would vote against the measure. “It is unclear to me how passing a nonbinding resolution that the president has already said he will ignore will contribute to any improvement or modification of our Iraq policy.”
“The president is deeply invested in this plan, and the deployments … have already begun,” Lugar added.
I don’t live in the great state of Indiana, but if I did, I would ask Lugar to ask himself a series of questions:
• Do you believe the American people tried to send George Bush a strong message about Iraq in the midterm election?
• Do you believe George Bush received the message?
• Do you believe there can be any improvement or modification of our Iraq policy until George Bush receives the message?
• Do you believe you owe it to your constituents, your country and to yourself to try and get that message through to George Bush?
• If every Senator who finds himself answering yes to all these four questions were to vote for the nonbinding resolution, do you believe that might possibly help get the message through to George Bush?

Obviously just a dodge. He can say he’s against it but still line up with his party’s rank and file. Pathetic.
