Why Not Fix Homeowner’s Insurance Too?
by sarabeth at 9:40 am on January 22nd, 2007 in Bush Man DateWhat I want to know is why President Bush doesn’t apply his health insurance epiphany to other industries where runaway costs to consumers represent an equally big scandal. Homeowner’s insurance, for example. Premiums are unconscionably high, increasing much faster than inflation. And there too we see consumers driving up premiums by choosing plans with gold-plated features. Take replacement-cost coverage. Not only does it lead to significantly higher premiums, but the people who choose this coverage are trying to actually profit from disasters (that’s profiteering, and it’s un-American, let me tell you). They want to receive more if their house burns down than they paid for that house in the first place. Just gouging the insurance companies is what it is.

Degree of sarcasm = 100%. In his health insurance proposal, the President is arguing that people drive up health insurance premiums by choosing better coverage (gold-plated plans), and twisting their arms to make them opt for reduced coverage is one way to tackle the “rising cost” of health insurance.
It is the most dim-witted thing he has ever proposed, I think.
