I Know You Got Soul

Frankly, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that my iTunes library contains exactly zero tracks by the recently departed James Brown. That’s not to say that I don’t own music by the man. Compilation CDs sit on the racks and dusty old LPs rest in taped up boxes in the attic, neither having seen the light in years. This isn’t to say that I wasn’t a huge fan, just that my tastes have changed quite a bit since I first heard the Godfather in junior high school.
But the fact that “James Brown” doesn’t appear in the “Artist” field of my iTunes, is about as misleading as possible. The music I spend most of my time listening to – hip hop and techno – literally wouldn’t exist without the innovations and energy that JB brought to the game. The more I think about that concept, the wide variety of beats that owe their very existence to the same man, the less else needs to be written.
I’ll leave you with DJ Dan’s 1993 mixtape “A Tribute to James Brown” (Side A | Side B) which is proof positive of the massive influence the man had.
I’m not going to mourn him today, I’m going to play this. And turn the volume up to 11. Bet that.
