Put Yourself In Their Shoes

There’s a lot of people still furious about what happened to them during Saddam Hussein’s period. You can imagine that. What happens if your brother or sister had been assassinated by Saddam Hussein and his political party? You’d be — you wouldn’t be happy about it. Reconciliation is difficult in a society that had been divided and tortured by a tyrant.
I wonder if the President has ever tried to imagine how Iraqis might feel about what happened to them during George Bush’s period?
600,000 civilian deaths in a country with a total population of 26 million. That’s a staggering 2.3%. Think of how many people each surviving Iraqi knew personally who have been killed during the George Bush period. Think of how many people each surviving Iraqi knew personally who were imprisoned and tortured. Now think of how each surviving Iraqi probably feels.
Think of how America would feel if China invaded tomorrow to protect us and the world from the excesses of the Bush regime, if they occupied the country for three years and accidentally erased 7 million Americans. Think of how you would feel if 2.3% of all your friends and family and colleagues at work had been killed. And China was proclaiming that they would never leave before the job was done.

from a transcript of david letterman’s show tonight in which he grills bill o’reilly:
“”Bonehead!” snaps Letterman, who then starts shaking his fist and waving his arms at O’Reilly as the subject turns to the war in Iraq. “Let me ask you a question - was there more heinous, more dangerous violence taking place [before America invaded] Iraq, or is there more heinous, dangerous violence taking place now in Iraq?” “
