U.S. Press Freedom Ranking Slips Yet Again
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on October 24th, 2006 in Bush Man DateHere’s another nice little entry for the Bush administration List Of Achievements. Out of 168 countries rated by the group Reporters Without Borders, the U.S. ranked 53 this year for press freedom. That’s down from 44 last year, and 17 in 2002.
Unfortunately, 2002 was the first year the rankings were produced, so we cannot get a full and proper estimate of how much we have slipped under George Bush. But why should the first two years have been very different from the last four?
And shouldn’t the alleged world champion of Freedom, the midwife of Democracy to oppressed peoples worldwide, the rocker of the cradle of Liberty do a little better than have almost one-third of the world’s nations ahead of it? Isn’t press freedom supposed to be a key cornerstone of Freedom, Democracy and Liberty?
Of course, it could be worse. At least we still preach press freedom, even if we don’t practice it.
