And God We Fear

George Bush’s God-fearing nature is much in the news recently. First it was Germany’s ex-Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, expressing unease at Bush’s born-again posture. In an interview with Der Spiegel:

Schröder, referring to Bush, told Der Spiegel that “if a person adopts a policy based on what he gleans from his prayers, in other words, a personal talk with God, it can lead to difficulties in democracy.”

And in his forth coming autobiography, My Life in Politics:

What worried me … was how much it came through that this president saw himself as ‘God-fearing’ and saw that as the highest authority,” Schröder says.

Then there’s the flap that certain objective, disinterested media folks are trying to stir up over Barack Obama‘s use of the phrase “messianic certainty” in his new book, The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream, to describe Bush’s governing philosophy.

If you think about it, God-fearing is a strange kind of word to describe the religious convictions of a devout Christian, isn’t it? Though one can’t exactly fault Bush for fearing God. Wouldn’t you fear God too, if you had the weight of Bush’s deeds on your conscience?
